The game started brightly with Peterborough missing several early goal scoring opportunities through Harry Hillam and Luca Oakley. Sheffield replied with their first shot from Charlie Greenwood which struck the foot of the Peterborough goalpost. Following this early flurry of action, Peterborough settled into their fast-moving hockey which was clearly testing their more experienced opponents. 6 mins. Harry Hillam burst through, and his shot struck the Sheffield goalpost. 7 mins. Luca Oakley’s turn of speed took him into a goal scoring position only for the Sheffield goalie to make a tremendous save. Sheffield replied with a good shot from Lewis Tasker which was finely saved by Tyler Salmon. 8 mins. Peterborough take the lead. A fine shot from Harry Hillam was saved by James Haigh only for the alert Josh Aaltonen to drive home the resultant rebound. Peterborough 1-0. 9 mins. A fine piece of play involving Josh Aaltonen and Jake Reed concluded with the former providing a timely pass to Jake to smash home the second goal. Peterborough 2-0. 11 mins. Declan Lander was then introduced to the play only for 30 seconds later to be sidelined for the rest of the game with a head injury after tangling with the Sheffield number 4. 12 mins. A fine slap shot from the Sheffield number 32, Charlie Greenwood (Sheffield’s best player), produces a fine save from Tyler Salmon in the Peterborough goal. 13 mins. Jake Reed again used his speed to create the opening to hit a fine slapshot towards the Sheffield goal only for it to hit the goalpost and rebound to safety. 15 mins. Fine interplay between Jake Reed and Alfie Newton resulted in an accurate shot from Alfie into the Sheffield net. Peterborough 3-0 16 mins. Harry Hillam burst through on the left side of the rink and placed a clever shot under the unfortunate James Haigh who was unsighted as the shot was hit. Peterborough 4-0. A confident display from Peterborough in the first half with the Sheffield Goalkeeper being the busiest player on the rink. Half Time Peterborough 4 Sheffield 0 Sheffield started the second half with a more competitive and robust approach which, for a while, unsettled Peterborough’s pattern of play. 33 mins. A good move from Sheffield down the left saw the ball squared across the Peterborough goal to Andy Whitton who quickly despatched his shot into the Peterborough net. Peterborough 4-1. 34 mins. Peterborough paid the price for conceding too many silly team fouls when the 10th foul was recorded. Charlie Greenwood stepped forward to take the direct hit and cleverly placed the ball beyond Anthony Williams in the Peterborough goal. Peterborough 4-2. 34mins. This second Sheffield goal seemed to focus the Peterborough players to get back to their best, fast flowing hockey. A fine run by Luca Oakley down the left forced another brilliant save from James Haigh. 35 mins. Taking over from his play a moment earlier, James Berry fed the ball to Luca Oakley who took on two Sheffield players in a mazy run and finished the move confidently as Charlie Greenwood desperately tried to get back on the goal line to prevent the goal. Peterborough 5-2. 37 mins. A fine exchange of passes between Harry Hillam and Luca Oakley, as they broke forward, resulted in Luca providing the pass for Harry to score his second goal of the match with a fine finish into the top corner of the net. Peterborough 6-2. 40 mins. Sheffield’s robust tackling finally caught up with them as they conceded their 10th team foul. Jake Reed was given the responsibility to take the direct shot but unfortunately found James Haigh, in the Sheffield goal, again making a fine save to deny him. 42 mins. Another fast break by Peterborough saw Luca Oakley and Alfie Newton left with just one opponent between them and the Sheffield goal. A timely pass from Luca to Alfie who despatched a fine shot beyond the Sheffield goalkeeper. Peterborough 7-2. 46 mins. A good run from Charlie Greenwood followed by a well placed slapshot brought a fine save from Anthony Williams in the Peterborough goal. Peterborough then retained possession of the ball to see out the remaining time to secure their win. Final score – Peterborough 7 Sheffield 2.
